Tauranga Boys College

Project summary

Client: Ministry of Education

Market Sector: Education

Completion: November 2023

Location: Tauranga, New Zealand

The recently constructed two-story building features 12 classrooms equipped with breakout areas, collaborative learning spaces, a dedicated teachers' workspace, and versatile kitchen facilities.

The architectural design of this building serves as a prominent gateway, strategically positioned at the school's Devonport Road entrance and adjacent to the school field. This design approach enhances the overall cohesiveness of the entry point, creating two interconnected courtyard areas. These courtyards serve as links to the gymnasium for hosting significant events, connect to the school's central hub, and open up toward the street. Furthermore, the addition of integrated outdoor bleachers enhances the functionality of these new external spaces.

In line with the surrounding campus, the building's exterior incorporates brick elements that pay homage to the existing structures. This choice of materials embodies the College's core values, reflecting strength and groundedness. Inside, sliding glazed partitions provide flexibility, allowing classrooms to be used in traditional or collaborative modes, providing the versatility needed for hosting various activities. Classrooms have easy access to both central collaborative zones within the building and external spaces, encouraging outdoor learning. Additionally, the upper level offers deep covered balconies, extending the usable space for various purposes.
